After longer than I planned, as always, here are my top 30 albums of 2008. There's a ton of stuff I still haven't listened to, and a few albums I've listened to in the last couple weeks that might've made the list had I listened to them more, but I figured I would just post my current top 30 or else this would never get done. In lieu of writing reviews for these things, I've decided to give each album an award or three. Most awards will be entirely arbitrary.

Rather than list my favorite EPs and comedy albums first like I did last year, I decided to instead make my own Top 40 playlist for 2008... mostly because there weren't that many solid EPs put out, and there were only three really great comedy releases this year (Louis CK, Mitch Hedberg, and George Carlin). The rest ranged from slightly above mediocre to downright hacky crap. This ended up being a lot more work than what I did last year, but I think it paid off. All of these songs are great, and this list will also give you a broader overview of what came out this year, since only 18 of the songs come from my top 30 albums. Tracks are tagged in reverse order (ie, "Teen Creeps" is track 1 and "I Can Feel a Hot One" is track 40). The reason for this should be obvious. I should have my top 30 albums uploaded sometime in the next week.

So, I finally decided to change the template and make this thing viewable again. Yes, it's pink. I don't know if that will change or not.

I have a metric fuckton of random shit that I uploaded for different people, so I'm just going to post links to some open directories on my webspace. It's mostly old Tooth & Nail stuff and other obscure, out of print Christian punk/metal albums. That should tide you over until I figure out what to post next. I've got some stuff that I've uploaded but never posted here for various reasons (I upped it for a friend, I forgot to post it, I posted it on a forum and forgot to post it here, etc.). I decided to finally post them here for your enjoyment.

On an unrelated note, Of Montreal's album from last year has really grown on me over the last week. I have no idea why I didn't love it before, but something finally clicked and I've been listening to it at least once a day for the past eight days or so, and that will probably continue for some time. If you don't have it, I would highly suggest you download it and give it a spin. Consider it my seventh favorite album of last year, instead of #21 as I originally had it.

Oh, and the Tom Green albums are actually his rap music, not comedy as you might expect. They're surprisingly good, too, especially Prepare for Impact. Even if you don't like Tom Green, they're worth a shot if you're into old school-sounding hip-hop.

Skullgrid

Super technical instrumental prog-metal with a drum set, an electric guitar, and a 12-string Warr guitar. Reminds me of Buckethead at times, especially his The Cuckoo Clocks of Hell album.

29: Deerhoof
Friend Opportunity

Noisy, experimental rock and roll from the land of the rising sun. Their most varied and probably accessible album to date. Get ready for a touch of hip-hop influence.

28: The American Dollar
The Technicolour Sleep

The first of many post-rock albums in this post. Guitar and keyboard driven, slow-moving melodies. Relaxing and contemplative.

27: Earth
Hibernaculum

Old Earth songs done in the style they started with last year's HEX album. Warm, beautiful soundscapes. Good for early morning/late night listening.

26: Melt-Banana
Bambi's Dilemma

More crazy rock music from Japan. Hyper fast, upbeat punk rock with high-pitched, yelping female vocals. The musical equivalent of eating a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch with Red Bull instead of milk.

25: Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals
Lifeline

A mix of folk, soul, and country rock from this great singer-songwriter. Recorded entirely live in a week's time. This music makes me happy.

24: Iron & Wine
The Shepherd's Dog

Sam Beam decided to move away from his roots, and bring in other instruments. Some people were angry. I was apprehensive. Then I listened to it, and by the end of the second track, all my fears had gone away. Beautiful, layered folk music.

23: Daft Punk

Part 2

This album reminded me why I love Daft Punk after being out of touch with them for a couple years. Their live show features the duo deconstructing their most popular songs and essentially creating mash-ups of their own material. It could easily have been gimmicky, but ends up working really well.

22: Eluvium
Copia

Wonderful, droning ambient post-rock. Good for spacing out or reading. Also has a couple solo piano numbers, for fans of his "An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death" album.

21: Of Montreal
Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

I almost didn't finish this album. Not because I hated it, but just because I didn't find it as amazing as I was promised. Thankfully I left it on long enough to get to "The Past is a Grotesque Animal", which I ended up loving, and I liked the second half of the album a lot more than the first. I went back and listened to it a few more times, and it definitely grew on me. So what does it sound like? Quirky, electronics-laden indie pop, I guess. Sometimes I suck at describing music.

20: Chuck Ragan
Feast or Famine

Acoustic folk from Hot Water Music vocalist Chuck Ragan, with a certain punk ethos oozing through. I love this guy's voice - there is so much power and emotion in it.

19: Best Fwends
Alphabetically Arranged

What the hell happened here? It sounds like a punk rock band threw up all over an Atari and some keyboards... and I love it. I'm tempted to compare these guys to The Moldy Peaches, not because they sound musically similar, but just because it sounds like two people having a bunch of fun making a record. Upbeat, unpretentious 8-bit punk.

16: Venetian Snares
My Downfall (Original Soundtrack)

This is not the soundtrack to a movie, but to Aaron Funk's actual downfall. This is usually touted as a follow-up to Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett, which is understandable as it features the combination of classical string parts and Funk's insane breakcore drum programming. However, only four of the album's fourteen tracks features percussion - the rest is all beatless classical pieces. I never thought I'd say this, but I actually think I like this better than Rossz. There is something sad and desperate and very moving about this album, and as much as I liked Rossz, it never evoked much emotion in me.

End of the Year Extravaganza

In this post, you'll find my top 10 EPs and my top 5 comedy albums. Tomorrow, I'll post my top 30 albums of the year and a couple albums I was disappointed with. Coming soon, too, will be a mixtape of my favorite songs off each of these albums, so you can get a taste of all the bands in case you don't want to download everything. To anyone involved in the music industry that finds this, I would just like to say that these are for evaluation purposes only, and should you be somehow attached to any of these albums and want one taken down, e-mail me and let me know. I'll take it down immediately, and won't re-upload it. And now, without further ado, let's get this thing going.

Top 5 Comedy Albums of 2007

Similar to 2005's "Invite Them Up" compilation, this two-disc set compiles material from 18 comedians who performed at Los Angeles' live comedy show "Comedy Death Ray". It features a number of alternative/experimental comedians, including Paul F. Tompkins, David Cross, Doug Benson, Maria Bamford, Hard 'n Phirm, Patton Oswalt, Jimmy Pardo, Neil Hamburger, Ian Edwards, Brian Posehn, Nick Thune, Scott Aukerman, Chris Hardwick, Mindy Kaling, Dan Mintz, Andy Daly, and cast members from Reno 911. It might be a little uneven, but it has a nice mix of different comedic styles, and a few brilliant bits. The upload for this failed, so I'll get it up tomorrow with my top 30 albums of the year.

4: Steven Wright
I Still Have a Pony

It's been 22 years since Steven Wright's first album "I Have a Pony" came out. In that time, he's put out a couple DVDs and acted in some movies, and apparently worked on his act quite a bit. He still has the same basic style (one-liners, puns, observational jokes, all wrapped in his surrealist brand of humor), but for whatever reason I found this album even funnier than his first. "The Store" is one of the best pieces of surrealist comedy I've ever heard.

3: Doug Stanhope
No Refunds (DVD Rip)

Doug Stanhope's new DVD finds him focusing more on telling generally dirty jokes and less on the political/observational humor he used to be known for. Not that he's completely removed that from his act, but it certainly isn't the main focus anymore, which is understandable. After fifteen years of comedy, Stanhope is ready to just "write dick jokes again", as he says on this recording (maybe... honestly, I forget if it's on this particular routine or one of the many bootlegs I've downloaded). Make no mistake though, he's as funny as he's ever been.

2: Louis C.K.
Shameless (DVD Rip)

Louis C.K. is definitely at the top of his game on this DVD. He's one of the most realistic and relatable comedians working today, because he focuses on observational humor that I think most mainstream comedians would stray from. He talks about how much he hates his family, friends, and just about everyone he meets. But beneath all the hatred, he comes off as someone who genuinely cares about those close to him. Oh, and he tells a lot of dick jokes.

Werewolves & Lollipops

Like I haven't talked about how much I love Patton Oswalt already. If you don't have this, just get it.

Top 10 EPs of 2007

10: Louis XIV
The Distances from Everyone to You

Great new EP from these Californian garage rockers. If you need something loud, fun, and overly sexual, this is for you. The ballad-esque title track is a nice change of pace, and the cover of the Flash Gordon theme is great.

9: Annuals
Frelen Mas: Be He Me B-Sides EP

Eight new tracks from the Be He Me sessions. If you liked the at times hazy, at times anthemic indie pop/rock of their full-length from last year, you'll like this.

8: Deerhunter
Fluorescent Grey EP

Surprisingly, my favorite parts of the Deerhunter full-length from this year weren't the psychedelic ambient parts that comprised most of the album, but the more upbeat rock sections. This EP focuses more on the latter style, and leaves out much of the ambient stuff. I know most people will probably disagree with me, but I like this EP a lot more than Cryptograms.

7: Intronaut
The Challenger

Three new songs, five live songs, and one remix from this jazzy, sludgy, post-metalcore quartet. I could actually do without the vocals, as I've always found them a bit out of place, but whatever. Musically, the band is top notch and more than makes up for the vocals. The live stuff has pretty good sound quality, and shows a more raw, unpolished side of the band.

6: Boris with Merzbow
Walrus/Groon

Okay, this is a single and not an EP, but it definitely deserves to be here. As shown on multiple occasions both in the past (Megatone, 04092001, Sun Baked Snow Cave) and this year (Rock Dream) Boris' doomy stoner rock and Merzbow's noise manipulation work great together. The A-side is probably more Boris than Merzbow, and features a cover of the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus", which they turn into a hazy, psychedelic gem. The B-side is most likely more Merzbow, and features an instrumental which shares its name with a King Crimson song, but has nothing else in common. It's a noisy, sludgy, fuzzed-out beast of a track, and really shows what the four artists can accomplish together.

5: Data
Aerius Light

While most people were hyping the Justice album "†" from this year (and rightly so), it seems no one had heard of Data, which is rather disappointing as they sound a lot like Justice (and thus, Daft Punk) only better. Four tracks of hooky house music that you'll love to death.

4: Crystal Castles
Crystal Castles EP

This is the artwork for their split 7" with HEALTH. As far as I can tell, this is their self-titled EP that won't come out till next year. Whatever. This is eight tracks of electro/chiptune music, and this, along with Data, Justice, and the new Daft Punk album have given me faith that non-IDM/Breakcore electronic isn't dead yet.

3: Atmosphere
Sad Clown Bad Fall #10

Being from the Minneapolis area and also being into the local music scene, I'm basically required to like these guys. However, I think I can truthfully say that "The Rooster" contained on this EP is my favorite thing Slug and Ant have ever put together, and the other four tracks are almost as good. A lot of people didn't like this one, preferring Sad Clown Bad Summer #9, but I definitely think this one is the best. If you like underground hip-hop, you need this.

2: Bright Eyes
Four Winds

Cassadaga was pretty bad, but thankfully Oberst decided to put this out too. Four Winds was easily the best track on Cassadaga, and backing it with more laid back material which features Ben Kweller and M. Ward on one track each makes for a great EP, and the best thing he's recorded apart from I'm Wide Awake It's Morning and it's accompanying single for Lua.

1: Giraffes? Giraffes!
More Skin With Milk-Mouth

Amazing instrumental mathy, progressive post-rock. Definitely more progressive than post-rock, though. This is great stuff. I can't describe how much I like this album in words, so you should just download it. Come on, just look at that artwork.

In the interest of trying to keep the Christmas albums diverse, today's album is Afroman's "A Colt 45 Christmas". It is vulgar, probably offensive, and really, pretty dumb. However, it made my friend and I laugh pretty hard earlier tonight. Here's a test to see if you should download it or not:

1. Did you at any point think the song "Because I Got High" was funny?
2. Does the idea of a song about Frosty the Snowman not being able to have intercourse with people because his phallus is made of frozen water sound humorous to you?

If you answered "yes" to one of those questions, you might want to give this a listen. If you answered "yes" to both, you shouldn't even have read this far before you started downloading. If you answered "no" to both, this definitely isn't for you.

A Brutal Christmas: The Season in Chaos

I can't decide if today's Christmas album is awesome, or awesomely bad. All I know is that your life won't be quite the same after hearing these death, black, and otherwise extreme metal versions of some of the most beloved Christmas hymns. This is worth getting just to hear Hearken's cover of "O Come All Ye Faithful", which features almost melodic cookie monster vocals throughout the whole thing.

Either way, here is the new Relient K Christmas album, which is really their old one with 7 new tracks. The Black Friday of Comedy Albums

Okay, so I was going to wait until I uploaded all my comedy albums to post anything, but I decided that was going to take too long, since I'm converting all the comedy to V8 quality before I upload it. Basically, that means that the files will be considerably smaller, but still sound almost exactly the same. This saves both of us time, and my friend (who gave us the webspace in exchange for Chipotle) bandwidth. All of the following albums are in V8, with the exception of the Greg Proops albums, and anything involving music (Stephen Lynch, bonus songs on Brian Posehn's album, etc.).

I know it's taking a long time for me to post stuff, but more and more comedy albums keep getting reported, so I'm trying to take care of all of that. Because a lot of you have been asking for it, I did put Manchester Orchestra's "Nobody Sings Anymore" back up, so you can get a copy of that here. I'm trying to figure out how I want to continue running this blog, since leaving it completely open like this probably means all the comedy albums (and most likely other stuff) will keep getting reported. I'm thinking about uploading a ton of comedy albums, posting all the links, and then when something gets taken down, that's it. I might do it over at the ,RARmy forums, so if something gets taken down, at least a bunch of people will hopefully have it and one of them will be willing to re-up it. Also, a somewhat closed community might help matters too. I love music and comedy, and I love sharing them with people, but if everything is going to keep getting reported, I don't see much of a point in it.

Also, I don't know if anyone from Minneapolis was planning on attending the Manchester Orchestra show tonight, but if you are, I won't be running the merch table after all. In Mourning of OiNK, Saul Williams, Manchester Orchestra, and Update

As I'm sure most of you are aware, Oink's Pink Palace got shut down last week. It's weird to say this, but I honestly feel like I've lost someone close to me. I listen to an album I nabbed off of Oink, or think about an album I want to listen to before I buy, and I honestly get a little depressed. I really miss being able to get practically anything within a few minutes. I'm also sad because Oink has been my only source for comedy albums for the last year or so, and now I have to rely on Demonoid for everything. I've still got enough comedy albums saved up to last for another few Super Comedy Sundays, but after that, I won't have a constantly updated list of new comedy albums for you all. It's run by a former admin on Oink. There's a lot of great information about Oink, it's downfall, the legal matters surrounding both Oink himself and the users, etc. You also might be interested in this article, in which Trent Reznor admits to having an Oink account. There's also information on the new Saul Williams album in that article, which comes out... well, today, since it's November 1st. The awesome news is, you can get it in 192 MP3 for free, or for $5 (which goes right to the guys involved with the album) you can get it in 320 MP3 or FLAC. I ordered my FLAC version a while ago, and got my link to downlaod it as I was typing this post. Saul Williams is a phenomenal artist, and I've been meaning to upload some of his stuff. If enough people like the new album, leave me a comment saying so (and preferably buy your download) and I'll upload his other albums.

Also, for you Manchester Orchestra fans, the band has put out a new split 7" single with Annuals. What's awesome is that they gave Pitchfork the okay to put free MP3s of it on their website, which you can download here. Also, they've got a documentary about them now, and if you join their street team and do a few things, you can watch the full thing online for free. Finally, Andy has a solo project called Right Away, Great Captain! and he put out an album back in January called The Bitter End. Because I'm awesome, I uploaded it for you, but please make sure you buy it off his Myspace if you like it. Manchester Orchestra was on Conan tonight, but I missed it because I had class, so scour YouTube and send me a link if you find it before me. In the meantime, you can always watch their Letterman performance from September or their official video podcast. With all the whoring I'm doing for them, I should really be getting paid. Instead, I'm probably going to end up running their merch table at the November 7th show here in Minneapolis for free (...well, for 2 free tickets and a free copy of their split 7"). For some reason I feel obligated to post an update on what's going on with this blog, even though I have a feeling most people don't read the stuff I post because it's long and boring, and just come for the music and comedy. Regardless, here's the deal. I am going to work this weekend to figure out everything that has been taken down. I'll re-up everything (except the new Coheed album - some Googling reveals that those have been getting reported pretty regularly), and password protect the RAR files. If that doesn't work, there's one other thing I might try, similar to what RegnYouth does. If that still doesn't work, I think I'll just make this a mailing list, because at least that way we can monitor who is downloading stuff, and hopefully keep anyone who would report files away. If you can't tell, I'm really committed to this thing, and I'm not quite sure why. I guess I just love discovering new music, or finding that one album by a band I like that I've been looking for for a while. There are few things that make me happier than music, and if I can do anything to spread that joy, I'd like to do it. So... there you go. Thanks for your support and patience.

please stop. What do you get out of this? I understand the Coheed, and even the Saves the Day. But the comedy? It's hard to even find decent comedy in stores, and comedians make more money off ticket sales than anything anyway. If anything, by putting those albums up, I'm encouraging people to go to the shows because they know they'll be getting quality stand up instead of hackey, ripped-off bullshit like Dane Cook. And how about the bands that encourage their material to be shared? I doubt you're doing this because you are against file-sharing, and instead are just a massive dick who gets off on ruining people's fun, but on the off chance that you are doing this for some moral reason, did you consider that some bands/comedians might want their music shared? New Coheed and Cambria leaked. I've listened to it once, and enjoyed it, but I'm nowhere near ready to compare it to their other albums. Also, I've uploaded the acoustic session Co&Ca did for XFM radio and Kerrang! magazine as an iTunes exclusive. The version of A Favor House Atlantic on there is amazing. Just a note: there's been a lot of confusion on different versions of this album (No World For Tomorrow), but from what I understand, a 128 WMA version leaked today, and then was transcoded a bunch of times. As far as I know, I have a transcoded version of the 128 WMA one, so keep that in mind even though it says they're 192 MP3s. Also, I think this is a censored version, but I'm not sure because I didn't catch anything. If you don't understand anything I just said, don't worry about it, because it probably doesn't affect you.

The long-awaited fourth installment in the Super Comedy Sunday series. You should know who's clean and who isn't by now, apart from the handful of new comedians. Maria Bamford is relatively clean (I think, it's been a while since I listened to this CD), Nick Swardson swears some but isn't really offensive apart from that, Sean Rouse tours with Doug Stanhope, so that's all you should need there, and Steven Wright is... Steven Wright. If you haven't heard him, get on that now. The Patton Oswalt set I uploaded is a bootleg, but the quality is really, really good and at least half the set is new material or Patton interacting with the audience. Absolutely worth a listen if you like him at all.

This is the debut album from Happy the Man released in 1977. It is a great progressive rock album with a kick of jazz fusion. It is mostly instrumental, but the couple songs with vocals are performed well. It has some cool complex time signatures and tons of intricate instrumentation which leads to a nice and layered sound. In high school, the first music I got into was the emo and post-hardcore scenes. I got into bands like Thursday, At the Drive-In, Yellowcard, and Saves the Day. I thought it was amazingly cool to hear bands sing about emotional issues or political issues or whatever else they felt like singing about. All I had really listened to previously was Christian pop/rock. I really liked Saves the Day and still consider them a classic emo/pop punk band. I don't know who, if any of this blog's readers will enjoy this, but I plan to post a few Saves the Day albums over the next few days.

I'll end this week with a nifty progressive weekend followed by a metal Monday. So if you hate this, there is good stuff to look forward to.

As promised, here are the four mewithoutYou releases I have. They had one EP before I Never Said That I Was Brave, called Blood Enough for Us All, but for the life of me, I can't find it. I have three of the six tracks off of it (Working in a Factory, The Comfort You Give is Only Torment, and an early version of Flamethrower), but if anyone has the other three tracks, I would love you forever if you uploaded them. I will get the Rollins album up tomorrow.

Anyway, this is my favorite band that is currently active. This is also one of the few times I've felt a little bad about uploading music, but if it gets more people to hear this music, I suppose it's worth it. Just um... buy the albums, or go to one of their shows or something. Their shows are absolutely fantastic, definitely in my top three live bands.

Sorry for the severe lack of updates recently. I've been downloading a couple things (an ISO of Dark Side of the Rainbow so I can burn a correctly set-up copy to DVD and the complete Bob Dylan discography), and my internet has been really slow for some reason over the last couple weeks, so those things are taking forever to get (close to 9 GB combined, at ~15 kb/s download for each). I've had a couple requests, which are as follows:

I will for sure get the mwY and Rollins stuff up before Thursday. As for the Rodriguez-Lopez stuff... I don't know what the requester wanted. I'm not really into The Mars Volta, though I do have most of their releases, I think (Tremulant EP, De-Loused in the Comatorium, Frances the Mute, Frances the Mute Single, Scabdates, Amputechture, in various different bitrates, mostly 128). I also have all four releases by the dub group he played bass for, De Facto, who I like a lot more than TMV. I don't have any of his solo recordings or anything by At the Drive In, so... yeah. If the person who requested his stuff can make a comment on here telling me what I should upload, I'll see what I can do.

Other than that, I've got a couple mixtapes I've been meaning to upload, and I'm close to being done with a new autumn mixtape (I have to test out a few more tracks, get a final sequence, and then crossfade stuff), so I'll probably upload some of those really soon. There's another Super Comedy Sunday coming very soon, too, since I know that's why a lot of people come here. I will take any suggestions for that - comics you'd like to see more or less of, specific albums, whether or not you would be interested in bootlegs, etc. Whenever I make my next upload, I'll also put up a list of all the comedy I have but haven't uploaded yet, and from then on, requests from you will mostly determine what gets put on here.

Finally, while you're waiting, you should give Doomed to be Stoned in a Sludge Swamp a look. As you probably guessed, it's a blog full of mostly doomy, sludgy, fuzzy, stoner rock/metal run by a guy (X-Angel) and his cat (Cheeto). I love it, and you should too.

...and to the person who said zip files wouldn't play on his/her iTunes or iPod... um... you have to open the zip file with a decompressing program (Windows even has one built in, but I would suggest using WinRAR or Winzip - if you have a Mac, try StuffIt), then copy the files to your hard drive before you can put them into iTunes.

Evanescence - In the Darkness of the Storm

This is an unofficial compilation I put together yesterday. It contains all of the official Evanescence material that is out of print (or in the case of the singles, hard to find for cheap here in the US). It doesn't include any live bootlegs, songs by other bands that Amy Lee has done guest vocals on, or anything from their three main releases (Fallen, Anywhere But Home, and The Open Door). For anyone who cares about this sort of thing, note that because of the way I made these CDs, all of the files are at 192kbps quality - however, some of the songs can only be found online in 128. So if you find a song in this compilation that you've only found in something under 192 online, it's probably safe to assume that it really is at a slightly lower bitrate, and just reads 192. I might make artwork for this at some point - it depends on how lazy I am now that college is starting up again tomorrow. If anyone else wants to make artwork and send it my way, feel free. Please give this to anyone you know who would be interested in it - the band wants their old material given out for free, instead of getting sold for hundreds of dollars on ebay. Finally, all the tracks are tagged with information about where the songs originated, in case you're interested in that sort of stuff.

Neutral Milk Hotel - Demos, Bootlegs, and Rarities

This is my favorite band of all time. Here are all the bootlegs, early cassette demos, and rare tracks that I have. I won't post tracklists for anything; instead, check The Kingdom of Carrot Flowers, and specifically, the discography and bootography for tracklists and information for the demos, and setlists and recording quality info for the bootlegs. I know there are a lot of bootlegs, so if you're trying to figure out what to get, I'd suggest the King's Arms show from 2001 (most recent Mangum performance, amazing sound quality), the Bottom of the Hill show from 1998 (decent sound quality, great set list, quite a few non-album tracks), the XFM session (good sound quality, interesting interview with Mangum), at the show at Chris Bilheimer's birthday party (only post-Aeroplane song in circulation, and it's one of Mangum's best songs).

The B-Sides download has tracks off four out of print compilations, and includes the untitled track from Ptolemaic Terrascope #21, a great-sounding version of Bucket from Periscope: Another Yoyo Compilation (sounds like a cleaned up version of Bucket (Organ Version)), Up and Over We Go from The Amazing Phantom Third Channel (a cleaned-up version of the one on Invent Yourself a Shortcake, probably), and Invent Yourself a Shortcake, which has nothing to do with the demo tape of the same name, and is from Champagne Dance Party.

I started listening to this band when I found out they were touring with mewithoutYou on their last US tour. I listened to "I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child" for the first time about a week and a half before I saw them live, and ended up listening to it 15 or 20 times. Needless to say, they've become one of my recent favorites. Their first two releases are pretty different from "Virgin", as it's mainly their vocalist and primary songwriter on his own. There's a heavier electronic influence, which gives the music more of a Postal Service or Prizefighter Inferno type sound. "Virgin" features a full, five-piece band, and combines the sounds of bands as diverse as The Weakerthans, Sufjan Stevens, Placebo, and Explosions in the Sky into something beautiful and anthemic. The Manchester Orchestra creates music that, even though it's occasionally dark, makes me happy to be alive. I've listened to "Virgin" more times than I can remember now, and every time I hear the fading notes at the end of "Colly Strings", I feel happier than I did when I started the album. Any music that has that effect deserves to be heard.

Also, these guys are going to be on a co-headlining tour with Colour Revolt from July 27 through August 16. I highly recommend you see them, as they are fantastic live, and they need all the support they can get. Check their myspace for dates, as their website isn't up to date as of right now (though check it, as there's a really good bio on them). If you do see them, their frontman Andy wants you to bring him your favorite albums, according to this, so do it.

What a terrific band name, eh? ¡Apeshit! hails from the Brooklyn area, I believe. Not much is known about them, personally, since they are not even signed to anyone nor have they released an official album. But, I do have a "demo" that is fully mastered complete with artwork and song titles. I've got a number of these crazy CDs, of bands who aren't signed but somehow I've purchased their albums. Anyway, ¡Apeshit! is some sort fo crazy spazcore band. Most songs are under a minute, and all of them have ridiculous titles. Another website was saying they were screamo, but I think spazcore sounds more correct. With all that being said, I present ¡Apeshit!'s debut album (demo), ¡Apeshit!.

Such is the case with Ved Buens Ende, a Norwegian metal band who incorporated a large variety of musical styles into their own unique avant-garde style. Sigur Rós Music + Video FTP

Sigur Rós has a couple FTP servers with a lot of their hard-to-find releases, a lot of unreleased material, live bootlegs, and a bunch of various videos (music videos, interviews, live videos, a couple movies they've soundtracked). Click the link below for information and the links to the FTP servers. Note that the main music FTP server seems to be full a lot, so try the mirror if the main one doesn't work. Also, both music FTP servers contain all the videos that the video server has. Finally, if you're having trouble accessing the site through an FTP client, you might just try Firefox. The music mirror and the video server both worked fine for me when I put the URL into Firefox.

White Lightning Mixtape + News

First things first: I was playing around with my statcounter today and found two music blogs that linked to me without asking for me to link back. I really appreciate the support, so I'm going to plug those blogs in this post. To the people who made soundweave and Music for the Rest of Us, my hat is off. If anyone finds out how to download the music from Music for the Rest of Us, let me know. For the life of me, I can't figure it out.

My friend from California (Christopher, the guy who almost got a music blog of his own going) was up here in Minnesota for the last nine days, and we talked about combining forces to make this blog even cooler. We may switch to Rapidshare. Leave your thoughts on that in the comments. I value your opinion.

Sorry about the lack of updates. I spent the week and a half before Christopher came out downloading a 44 GB Loveline torrent because the Loveline Archive is no longer around.

Finally, music. This is one mix in a series of mixes Christopher and I made for each other. We each chose two themes for a mix, and then went in whatever direction the theme took us. This was one of my themes. I'd been wanting to make a mix of super fuzzy, lo-fi, stoner/sludge/doom rock (but nothing too heavy - that is for another mix) and figured that the best way to get it done would be to make it for someone else. Titling the mix after a street name for LSD sounded like a good idea.

The new Bright Eyes leaked today. I downloaded it. Then I uploaded it. Now you download it. I don't even know if it's good or not because I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Also included is the Four Winds EP which has five b-sides that aren't on Cassadaga. The EP is really good, especially the title track. Apparently there's another b-side called "Endless Entertainment" on the official Bright Eyes website, but I can't seem to find it. There's another b-side that will go out to people who pre-order the album called "Susan Miller Rag", but it doesn't seem like that has been leaked yet. Brian Eno - Ambient 1-4

All four Ambient albums from the pioneer of ambient music, Brian Eno. Ambient 1: Music for Airports was indeed made to be played at LaGuardia Airport in New York. Eno took various repeating tape loops and played them at the same time. Because they were all different lengths, with different amounts of silence at the end, the songs evolved on their own over time. Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror was created with fellow ambient musician Harold Budd. Budd would play the piano, experimenting with getting different sounds out of it, while Eno would perform various treatments and effects to the sound as Budd was playing. The entire album is piano-based, with some occasional chimes and synths. Ambient 3: Day of Radiance is by American ambient musician Laraaji, with Eno producing. The first three tracks ("The Dance") are played mostly on a dulcimer, with a few other stringed instruments. The last two ("Meditation") are played on a zither. While Eno is listed as producer, he did a lot of work with treating and manipulating the sounds to the point that they no longer sound like they came from one instrument. He also did a lot of layering of the various parts. Ambient 4: On Land was the last in Eno's Ambient series. It could be considered one of the first dark ambient recordings, though it has some moments that are reminiscent of Ambient 2. Ambient 4 consists of synthesizer notes, long, processed drones, field recordings, and bits of sound left over from the previous Ambient recordings.

So there you go. If you're interested in ambient music, and you haven't heard these, you're really missing out. Not only are they an important chronicle of the birth of ambient music, but they are damn good albums. Each one carries a different mood, and thus, a different purpose. Try listening to them in different places and on different speaker set-ups (normal computer speakers, a nice stereo system with a subwoofer, headphones) if at all possible. There's a lot to be discovered on these recordings.

The complete Explosions in the Sky

I just bought the double-disc version of the new Explosions in the Sky last night, so I thought I would upload their whole discography for you. They are one of the best post-rock groups around right now, and they're kind of refreshing because they stick to guitar, bass, and drums with the occasional string or piano part thrown in. They're not wildly experimental like some bands in the genre (Godspeed You! Black Emperor comes to mind), and a lot of their more recent material falls in the 2 to 7 minute range, which should make them more accessible to people who aren't used to listening to super-long instrumental pieces. It may be formulaic, but Explosions in the Sky are exceptional at what they do. They have left me breathless on a few occasions, because of the beauty and power contained on their albums. Enjoy.

The Rescue EP is available on the Explosions in the Sky website so I've just added direct links to the MP3s.

There are three songs on the Friday Night Lights soundtrack that aren't by Explosions in the Sky, but I included them anyway in case people were interested in them. They're also good songs.

They had a track exclusive to a compilation their record label put out, so I just upped that track apart from the rest of the compilation.

Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero Leaks

So I guess Nine Inch Nails has a new album coming out in April. I found a CD rip of the first single, "Survivalism", at 320 kbps. There is also another song floating around the Internet called "My Violent Heart". There's a pretty interesting story behind the leak of that song. I guess someone found a USB flash drive in the bathroom at a NIN gig in Lisbon, Portugal. Supposedly, the version I downloaded is a direct copy of the one on the USB flash drive, which is kind of cool. It came with a file called "Phone Message". On the backs of the recent NIN tour shirts, some numbers are a lighter color. When put together, they spell out the US phone number +13102951040. The file is a recording of what you hear when you call that number. There has been some pretty ridiculous advertising for this thing, which you can read about at the wikipedia page for it. This looks like it's going to turn out to be a pretty massive ARG (put on by none other than 42 Entertainment, the people responsible for I Love Bees and the I, Robot ARGs), and the album is going to be a concept album, both of which excite me a lot. I guess I can kiss my life goodbye until this thing drops on April 17.

Now that that's out of the way, I should probably say a little something about the music. Survivalism is pretty decent. Sounds like it probably could've been on a-With-a-Teeth-a. It's got the same minimalistic approach, simple drum pattern, repetitive fuzzy guitar line, miscellaneous percussion during the verses, with a quick build at the chorus, then back to quieter with a little more complexity. Then back and forth between loud and quiet with different variations. Lyrics seem to talk about the dystopian America that the new album will focus on. My Violent Heart is a better track, in my opinion. It's got the same quiet-loud-quiet pattern, but it's more atmospheric. Trent does his spoken-word vocals for the verses, and then kind of yells the chorus. At about 2:45, it goes off into a cool instrumental part with a bunch of variations until the end, similar to Closer.

Anyway, enough of my rambling that no one reads. Here's what you came here for:

The new Modest Mouse album leaked. I've got it on in the background right now, and I'm on track 10. I don't think it sounds very good, but I'll have to give it a proper listen or two at work tomorrow before I really start to make a decision. Either way, here it is. If it sucks, you can thank me for saving you $15.

EDIT: The track tags are reversed. Track 1 is tagged as 14, Track 2 as 13, and so on. I downloaded it in a torrent as a zip file, and just started upping the same zip file before I got it into iTunes. I figured a couple people might be as anal retentive about that kind of stuff as I am, and thought I would make a note of it here. Also, I'm coming around on the album. I don't know where I'd rank it amongst Modest Mouse's other albums, but I definitely enjoyed listening to it today.

I had planned on making this post my top 25 albums of 2006. I even went as far as to upload a few of them and start writing reviews. However, as happens every year, I read a ton of other "Best of 2006" lists and find a ton of albums that sound like they might make my list, were I to hear them. I don't want to miss out on what could potentially be some great albums, so I always postpone my list until I forget about it and it never gets done. That, and I hadn't even listened to a bunch of stuff I got at the beginning of last year. So, while I take some time and try to cram in another 20 albums or so, I figured I would upload something to keep the eight people who come here busy until I finally get around to my best of 2006 post. Anyway...

I rediscovered my love for Patton Oswalt last night when some friends and I listened to his 222 album in its entirety while driving aimlessly around. I've heard that album at least 20 times, and there are still parts of it that make me laugh uncontrollably. If I had to pick the best working stand-up comedian around today, it'd be a toss-up between Patton and Doug Stanhope. The sheer absurdity of some of his bits, the weird voices and sounds he makes for no apparent reason apart from drunkennes, and the obscure, nerdy pop-culture references make for hilarious times. And if you like quoting stand up bits amongst your friends (and really, who doesn't?), Patton is definitely your guy. Play him for your friends who think Dane Cook is the best comedian ever. If they get it, they're in. If they don't... probably stop hanging out with them. This download got pretty huge, so it's broken into two parts.

This is the first ska album I ever heard, and to this day it's still my favorite. If you like ska, and you haven't heard this, do yourself a favor and get it right now. Half of it is regular third-wave ska and the other half is that type of third wave ska where they rap over it. Surprisingly, both parts of the album are equally good. Oh, and the bass lines are sweet too.

The complete Buckethead - Part One: Solo Recordings

Here is the complete solo Buckethead discography, minus the extremely rare early Giant Robot demo tape (not Giant Robot NTT, but Buckethead's first solo release... check the Buckethead entry on Wikipedia if you are confused). In the coming days/weeks, I plan on uploading his entire discography, so if any of the 8 people who read this thing have any Death Cube K, Corn Bugs, El Stew, Praxis, Pieces, or Thanatopsis (apart from Anatomize) albums and would be willing to upload them, I would in turn upload any album (or albums, if you up more than one) you like. Any soundtracks he's done would be great as well. And now, here are the albums. Reviews/descriptions may or may not be coming shortly, when I don't have an essay and seven one page papers to write. Also, I noticed that I'm missing track 17 from the Bucketheadland Blueprints album. I'm not sure what the title of it is right now, but Decapitation should be track 18, and everything else after that is also one track higher, obviously. Go here to download track 17. I know it's been forever since I last updated this, but I promise there are big things in store, and they may come as early as tomorrow night... or tonight, I guess, since I'm writing this at 2:30 in the morning. Until then, though, I thought I'd plug a couple of the links that sit over there in the sidebar and are probably ignored by most of the 8 people who come here.

A great netlabel with the majority of their albums for free download as well as the option to purchase the actual CDs. All the music is chiptune music, which means it's made using software that emulates the sound chips in old video game/computer technology (in some cases the actual hardware is used). The result is music that sounds like it came from some imaginary video game. Good stuff.

Abandonia
Though it has nothing at all to do with music, Abandonia definitely deserves a mention. It's a huge repository for old DOS games, all of which can be downloaded for free and played using a DOS emulator (also available on the site, with instructions on using it). There are new games added almost daily.

The Internet Archive
There is so much crap for download on here, I don't know where to begin. All I will say is, if you're into live bootlegs of bands, and you haven't been here... you should probably go.

A lot of the stuff for download is really rare, hard to find, and out of print. Oh, and it's all free.

Wine, Women and Song
I saved the best for last. This is my personal favorite music blog. It's mostly hard to find drone, doom/sludge/stoner metal, and post-rock, although there is the occasional weird folk album or something thrown in for good measure. There are also posts about crazy artists every once in a while too. I love this blog to death.

So there you have it. I've bought a lot of CDs in the last couple weeks, and downloaded a ton of music in the past couple months or year or something, and I'm finally getting around to listening to a lot of it, so expect a lot of different genres of music to be posted soon. I should probably start this post off introducing myself. My name is Jed. Perhaps you've seen my website. Probably not, though. Anyway, you're not here for that, you're here to steal music. So here we go.

This CD is somewhat new to my repitoire (a few months), but it already holds a special place in my heart. Jens' voice is so pathetic and wonderful at the same time. However, it's Jens' honest from-the-heart lyrics that hit home for me. Listen to the song "Someone to Share My Life With." The first time I heard that song, I shed a tear.

Genghis Tron often gets billed as nothing more than a cybergrind band, which is a shame. A crying one, at that. Yes, there are elements of cybergrind, but there is so much more to their sound. There are entire sections within their songs that range from drum n' bass to ambient to analog dance music to psychedlic rock to post-hardcore. When the band really shines, however, is when they seamlessly merge all those disparate styles into a cohesive whole. Take "Arms" off of the Cloak of Love EP. It starts off with a dance beat, goes almost immediately into a blast of cybergrind interspersed with moments of DnB, into a section of Aphex Twin-type ambient music, another blast of cybergrind, before finally combining elements from all of those styles with a post-hardcore guitar line over everything, all in the course of two and a half minutes. The rest of their music follows suit, throwing vast amounts of musical genres at the listener over the length of a typical pop song, sometimes even less. The closest thing I can compare them to would be Naked City-era John Zorn, only with more musical styles and the ability to combine those styles together rather than just jumping from one to the next. While they may seem a little jarring and difficult at first simply because you never know what they'll throw at you next, given time Genghis Tron may just change the way you listen to and think about music. Just a note: the versions of Rock Candy and Laser Bitch on the Laser Bitch single are different than those on the Cloak of Love EP.

Autechre - Anti

Autechre was one of the main bands to create electronic music in the early 90's that wasn't easily accessible and/or written for dance clubs. They're known for their complex rhythmic lines and use of odd time signatures and chord progressions. This particular single was created in response to the British Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 which, in an attepmt to destroy the rave scene, prohibited music that contained "repetitive beats" to be played in a public setting. The first two tracks contain repetitve beats, but the third track has no repetitive beats in the whole thing. While it may seem gimmicky (and really, it is), it also works well, and ends up being one of Autechre's best songs. Lost is also decent, though Djarum falls a little short. Flutter more than makes up for it, however.

Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust

A phenomenal hip-hop album from one of the best rappers in the business today. Sage is intelligent, agressive, humorous, introspective, and politically-minded. His music is grounded in the classic hip-hop he grew up listening to, and though he wears his influences on his sleeve, he manages to push the boundaries of modern hip-hop. He's won numerous rap battles and is an accomplished spoken word artist. Attacking everything from the government to love to the current rap scene with wit and insight, Sage may not always be upbeat and optimistic, but his music remains smart and catchy as hell.

Random is a band whose members used to go to my old high school. Then they graduated and broke up. This was their last album. It's full of awesomeness and good times. It's a hybrid of funk and ska with some weird touches and a keyboard thrown in for good measure. Their bass player is really really good. Enjoy.

Nurse With Wound - Livin' Fear of James Last or... Joy in the House of Dada!!!! a Nurse With Wound variety pack

Nurse With Wound is one of the most prolific musical groups ever, though to call them a "musical group" is probably misleading for two reasons:
1. Apart from their first three releases, NWW has been one man, Stephen Stapleton, along with a small collective of people he frequently collaborates with, and
2. Quite often you'd be hard pressed to call what Stapleton does "music", at least in the common sense of the word.

Stapleton is more prone to rampant sonic experimentalism than actual music. Contained on this album alone is everything from typical rock instruments randomly being "played" and then chopped up and processed like crazy ("The Six Buttons of Sex Appeal") to extreme industrial music ("Cold") to Brian Eno-esque ambient music ("Sea Armchair") to an almost normal rock song ("Two Shaves and A Shine" with David Tibet of Current 93 on vocals). Every song presents a different facet of Nurse With Wound, whether dark, scary, comedic, upbeat, relaxing, and pretty much everything in between.

While cramming 27 years and 100+ albums into two and a half hours may seem impossible, this two disc set, compiled, mixed, sequenced, and edited by Stapleton himself, does an honorable job. It may trip up a little in including multiple tracks off a couple albums when there were over a hundred albums to choose from, but the tracks are all so different that had the back of the CD case not listed what album each song was off of, I never would have guessed that some of the tracks were off the same album.

Expect more NWW albums in the future, as I'm only a handful of albums away from having their entire catalogue.

AFX - Hangable Auto Bulb (2 EPs)

These two EPs, released 8 weeks apart in 1995 and limited to 1000 copies each, mark a significant change in Richard D. James's style from the analogue and ambient sounds of his old releases to the new IDM and Drill n' Bass style he's been working in up until the rebirth of his classic acid style with the Analord series of singles. These two vinyl-only EPs were re-released together on a single CD last October, though the track times differ slightly between the vinyl and CD releases. In case anyone cares, these are the vinyl versions of all the songs. Track two on Hangable Auto Bulb 2, "Arched Maid Via RDJ", is one of my favorite songs ever.
